Reflections on Serving on the AFP Houston Board

When I decided that 2020 would be my last year on the AFP-GHC Board of Directors, I had no idea what this year would hold. None of us did, of course. I also never imagined, when I joined my first committee (finance) back in 2014, that I was about to embark on an experience that would change me both personally and professionally.

Despite the challenges and anxiety this year has brought, it has been an excellent time for me personally to reflect on what is important to me and to identify the many people and experiences for which I am grateful. My service on the AFP board is way up there. If I can say one thing about the last six years, it’s that I was pulled out of my comfort zone over and over—from speaking in front of crowds, to getting my introverted self out into social gatherings, to confronting my anxiety over an ever-shifting and constantly full calendar. To be sure, I was challenged professionally. I learned a great deal about leadership and when to step up, when to hang back, and how to know the difference. Personally, I met amazing people and friends I know I will have for life.

Reflections on Serving on the AFP Houston Board

I am truly honored to have been a part of this great organization. Over the last six years, the chapter has implemented a five-year strategic plan; embarked on the challenging journey of addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion in our chapter, profession, and community; continued taking a good, hard look at what our members need and how the chapter can respond; and made our way through a tough year for all of us financially, emotionally, professionally, and personally.

I came in on the heels of some amazing leadership, and I am hopeful about the future and direction of our chapter. It won’t be easy, but I have confidence in the incoming board and leadership. Please get involved—the chapter needs you! As for me, I’m not going anywhere! Please call on me anytime, and here’s hoping that 2021 is a healthy and successful one for all of you!
